Accident Recovery in Sheffield

Arranging Recovery After a Collision

After a road traffic collision, a damaged vehicle may need collecting rather than driving to a garage. DK’s Recovery provides accident recovery in Sheffield and surrounding areas, with collection arrangements based on the vehicle’s condition and location.

Contact us with the make and model, where the vehicle is and a description of the damage. We’ll discuss whether we can assist, the loading requirements and your preferred destination before you book.

Our service concerns vehicle recovery and transport; it is not a substitute for emergency services.

Accident Recovery Vehicle Requirements

Damage can affect how a vehicle is loaded. Tell us about its condition so we can confirm whether suitable recovery is available.

Cars

Describe the damage to your car and mention affected wheels, steering or suspension. Let us know whether it can roll and whether the keys are available.

Vans

Provide the van’s model and size, along with damage details. Tell us about any load it is carrying, as this can affect collection requirements.

Motorbikes

Share the motorcycle’s make, model and visible damage. Its condition and position help determine whether suitable handling and transport can be arranged.

Light Commercial Vehicles

Contact us with the vehicle’s weight, dimensions and load details. Recovery suitability must be confirmed for the particular vehicle and damage involved.

From Collection to Your Agreed Destination

Once recovery is arranged, the vehicle needs a suitable place to be delivered. This may be a garage, a repairer or another agreed address, depending on your arrangements.

Provide the destination and a contact person, and confirm that the vehicle can be received. If someone has already arranged collection or delivery, tell us when enquiring so the instructions can be checked before another booking is made.

Discuss Accident Recovery

What to Discuss Before Collection

Clear information about the damage, location and delivery arrangements helps us assess your recovery request.

Vehicle Location

Give the exact location and explain whether the vehicle is at the collision site, a car park, a driveway or another collection point. Mention any access restrictions.

Damage and Loading

Describe visible damage and anything preventing the vehicle from rolling or steering. Tell us about detached parts or other conditions that could affect collection.

Existing Arrangements

Let us know if another provider, garage or insurer has already arranged recovery. Keep the agreed collection and delivery instructions available when you call.

Delivery and Handover

Confirm the agreed delivery address and who will receive the vehicle. Mention opening hours, access instructions and whether a handover needs arranging.

Your Recovery Quote

The vehicle’s condition, loading requirements and transport distance can affect the cost. Ask about availability and the quote before confirming a booking.

Other Recovery Services

If the vehicle stopped because of a fault rather than a collision, see breakdown recovery. For other undriveable vehicles, see vehicle recovery. A scheduled move may be better suited to vehicle transportation.

At the scene, before anything else

Your safety comes ahead of the vehicle, always. If anyone is hurt, call 999. If you are on a motorway or dual carriageway, get out of the passenger side where you can and get behind the barrier — not in the vehicle, and not on the carriageway side of it. On a normal road, if the car will move a few feet, get it as far off the road as you can and put the hazards on.

Once people are safe, photograph the position of the vehicles, the damage, the road and the other driver’s registration. Exchange names, addresses and insurance details. You are legally required to stop and give your details, and to report the accident to the police within 24 hours if details were not exchanged at the scene.

What we do when we arrive

We assess whether the vehicle can be winched or needs lifting, make the scene safe, and load it. Badly damaged cars, cars with broken suspension and anything leaking fluid go on the flatbed rather than being towed on their own wheels — dragging a car with a collapsed corner does more damage on the way to the garage than the accident did.

We clear debris from the carriageway where it is safe to do so, and we can recover more than one vehicle from the same incident. If the police or National Highways are already on scene, we work to their instructions.

Where your car goes next

That is your decision, and it is worth knowing you have one. If the accident was not your fault, you are not obliged to use the recovery firm or the repairer your insurer suggests. You can nominate your own garage, and we will take your vehicle to any address you give us.

If you have not decided yet — which is normal at the roadside, in the dark, with your car on a flatbed — we can move it somewhere secure while you speak to your insurer in the morning.

Non-fault accidents

If another driver was at fault, their insurer is generally liable for the recovery and storage costs. Keep every receipt and note the time you called. We give you paperwork showing what was recovered, from where and to where, which is what an insurer will ask for.

What we recover

Cars, vans and light commercial vehicles. Motorcycles. Electric and hybrid vehicles — these go on a flatbed as standard, because towing an EV with its driven wheels on the road can damage the motor, and a damaged battery pack needs handling and distance a conventional tow cannot give. If you have had an accident in an electric car, say so when you call.

Areas we cover

Sheffield and the whole of South Yorkshire, including the Parkway, the M1 between junctions 33 and 36, the A57, the A61 and the A630. We also cover Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Chesterfield, Worksop, Dronfield and the surrounding areas.

Accident recovery questions

How quickly can you get to an accident in Sheffield?

It depends where you are and what else we are on, but within Sheffield we are usually with you inside the hour, and often sooner. Tell us your location when you call and we will give you a realistic time rather than an optimistic one.

Who pays for accident recovery?

If the accident was not your fault, the other driver's insurer is generally liable. If you were at fault it depends on your policy, as many comprehensive policies include recovery. Keep the paperwork we give you either way, because your insurer will ask for it.

Can I choose which garage my car goes to?

Yes. You are not required to use the repairer your insurer recommends, particularly in a non-fault claim. Give us the address and we will take it there.

Do you recover cars from motorways?

Yes, including the M1 through South Yorkshire. If you are on a motorway, get behind the barrier and call 999 first if anyone is hurt or the vehicle is in a live lane, then call us.

Can you recover an electric car after an accident?

Yes. Damaged electric vehicles go on a flatbed as standard and are handled with the extra care a damaged battery pack requires. Mention that it is an EV when you call so we send the right vehicle.

What if my car is a write-off?

We can still move it, to a storage compound, a salvage yard, or wherever your insurer directs. A vehicle that will never be driven again still has to be got off the road safely.

24 hours a day, every day of the year.
