Vehicle Recovery in Sheffield

Help Moving a Vehicle That Cannot Be Driven

A vehicle does not have to break down on the road to need recovery. It may be parked at home, waiting outside a garage or unable to leave a car park.

DK’s Recovery provides vehicle recovery in Sheffield and surrounding areas. Contact us to discuss collecting your vehicle and moving it to a garage, home address or another agreed destination.

Share the make and model, its condition and the collection location. This helps us establish the loading requirements and whether we can carry out the recovery.

Tell Us About Your Vehicle

The type of vehicle is only part of the picture. Its weight, condition and position also affect how it can be collected.

Cars

Let us know whether the car starts, rolls and steers. Mention lowered suspension, damaged wheels or anything else that could affect loading.

Vans

Provide the van’s model and size, and tell us whether it is carrying tools, equipment or other goods. The load can affect recovery suitability.

Motorbikes

Tell us the motorcycle’s make, model and condition, including any damage that may affect handling. We’ll discuss whether suitable recovery can be arranged.

Light Commercial Vehicles

Share the vehicle’s dimensions, weight and load details before booking. Please contact us to confirm suitability rather than assuming every commercial vehicle can be accommodated.

From Collection Point to Agreed Destination

Recovering a vehicle involves more than choosing where it needs to go. Access to the vehicle, its ability to move and the space available for loading all matter.

When you contact us, describe where it is parked and provide the destination address. We’ll discuss availability, the collection requirements and a quote before you confirm the job.

Planning Your Vehicle Collection

Share the make and model, its condition and the collection location.

Access to the Vehicle

Mention narrow driveways, locked gates, underground parking or height restrictions. Tell us if other vehicles or obstacles restrict access.

Wheels, Steering and Keys

Let us know if the wheels are locked, the steering is damaged or the keys are unavailable. These details can change the equipment and arrangements needed.

Garage or Destination Arrangements

If the vehicle is going to a garage, confirm that it can accept the delivery. Provide its address and any relevant opening times or handover instructions.

Your Recovery Quote

Collection distance, vehicle condition and loading requirements can influence the cost. Give us the details so the quote reflects the work involved.

Collection and Delivery Areas

Contact us about your pickup point and destination, whether both are in Sheffield or the journey extends beyond the city. Availability will be confirmed for your particular request.

When a car has to be carried rather than towed

Vehicle recovery is not the same job as breakdown recovery. Breakdown recovery is what happens when a car stops on you. This is what happens when a car cannot be driven at all, whether it stopped yesterday or has been sitting on the drive since March.

The cars that must not be towed on their wheels

An automatic with the engine off is the common one: on most automatics, towing with the driven wheels turning circulates no gearbox oil and can wreck the transmission. A car with a locked wheel, a seized brake, a snapped driveshaft or crash damage to a corner is the same story. All of those go on the bed, all four wheels off the ground, and that is not us upselling, it is the only way the car survives the journey.

Cars with no keys, no drive and no cooperation

A vehicle with no keys cannot be steered or released, which means it has to be winched rather than driven onto the bed. It is a normal job, but it changes the approach and it takes longer, so tell us on the phone rather than when we arrive. The same goes for a car with a flat that will not hold air, a snapped cable, or a handbrake that has seized on after a long stand.

Low, long, heavy and awkward

Lowered and classic cars ground out on a standard ramp angle, so they need a low-angle bed and wheel straps rather than chassis hooks. There is more on that in our guide to classic car transport. At the other end, motorhomes and campervans, caravans and trailers and adapted and wheelchair accessible vehicles each bring their own limits on weight, height and where the straps can go.

Electric and hybrid vehicles

An EV or hybrid with a fault goes on a flatbed, not on a rope and not on a dolly, because turning the driven wheels turns the motor. Tell us it is electric when you call. It is not a problem, but it is not a detail to leave until we arrive. Our guide to electric vehicle recovery covers what we need to know.

Cars that are not road legal right now

A car with no MOT or no tax can still be moved, and moving it on the back of a truck is the lawful way to do it rather than driving it and hoping. That comes up most when someone has bought a project, inherited a car, or has one that failed its test. Our guide to transporting a car with no MOT sets out what applies.

Vehicle recovery questions

Can you recover a car if I have lost the keys?

Yes. Without keys the car cannot be steered or released, so it has to be winched onto the bed rather than driven on. It is routine work but it takes longer and needs the right space around the vehicle, so say so when you ring rather than when we get there.

Can you recover an automatic?

Yes, on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. That is not a preference: towing most automatics with the driven wheels turning can destroy the gearbox, so it is the flatbed or nothing. Tell us it is an automatic when you call.

Can you move a car with no MOT or no tax?

Yes. Carrying it on a truck is the lawful way to move a vehicle that is not road legal, and it is a large part of what this service is for. There is more in our guide to transporting a car with no MOT.

Can you recover an electric car?

Yes, on a flatbed. An EV or hybrid must not be towed with the driven wheels turning, because that spins the motor. Tell us the make and model when you call so we bring the right equipment and know where the recovery points are.

Does the car have to go to a garage?

No. It goes wherever you tell us, as long as the destination knows it is coming and can receive it. Home, a garage, a body shop, a storage unit, a buyer's address. Confirm the far end can take it before we set off, because a second journey costs twice.

The car is boxed in or in a tight space. Is that a problem?

It is the single most useful thing to tell us in advance. Whether there is room to get a truck alongside, whether there is a height limit above it, and whether it can be rolled or winched clear all decide which vehicle we send. Describe the space honestly and we will bring what actually fits.
