Nobody plans a breakdown. Vehicle transport is the opposite: the vehicle is not going anywhere in a hurry, you know where it needs to be, and the only questions are when and how. That changes what matters.
This is the most common reason people ring us. A car bought at auction, from a private seller two counties away, or off a forecourt without tax on it yet. It is worth arranging the collection before you commit to the purchase rather than after, because access at the seller's end is the thing most likely to catch you out. If it is a Cat S or Cat N car, expect it to be a non-runner and plan accordingly.
A vehicle with no MOT, no tax or no insurance can be moved perfectly lawfully on the back of a truck, and that is the point of doing it that way rather than risking a drive. It comes up with project cars, inherited cars, and cars that have just failed a test. Our guide to transporting a car with no MOT explains what applies.
If a car has stood for months it may not start, the tyres may have flat-spotted and the handbrake may have seized on. None of that stops it being transported, but all of it changes the method, so mention how long it has been standing when you book rather than assuming it will drive onto the bed.
Low or classic cars need a low ramp angle and wheel straps rather than chassis hooks, covered in our guide to classic car transport. Motorhomes, caravans and trailers and adapted vehicles all have their own weight, height and strapping constraints. Say what it is when you book and the right truck is allocated from the start.
Access at the collection point, access at the destination, and whether someone will be present at each end. A booked slot goes wrong far more often because of a locked gate or a resident's bay than because of anything mechanical. Photograph the space if you are unsure and describe it honestly.
Yes, and it is regular work. Auction and trade sites usually have release procedures, cut-off times and a gate pass, so give us the site, the lot or stock number and the release details when you book. Getting that wrong is the usual reason a collection has to be repeated.
Yes. Carrying it on a truck is the lawful way to move a vehicle that is not road legal. There is more detail in our guide to transporting a car with no MOT.
Not necessarily, but somebody has to be able to grant access and confirm the handover. We move cars from empty driveways and to closed garages regularly. What we need instead is clear instructions, a contact number that will be answered, and confirmation that the destination expects it.
It changes how it is loaded rather than whether it can be moved. A car that will not start, will not roll, or has a seized handbrake has to be winched on rather than driven on. Tell us how long it has been standing and whether the wheels turn freely, and we will bring the right equipment.
Sheffield and South Yorkshire is home, and we cover the surrounding counties routinely. Longer journeys are quoted on the distance, the vehicle and the timing. Ask when you call and you will get a figure rather than a guess.
On the bed, with all four wheels off the ground, strapped at the wheels rather than pulled down on the chassis or the suspension. That matters most on low, classic and older vehicles, where chassis hooks can do real damage to the very cars people are most careful about.
