Before anything else — two exceptions

If a child or an animal is inside, call 999 now. Do not ring a locksmith, do not ring us, do not wait. The inside of a car on a warm day heats far faster than most people expect, and the emergency services will attend and get the door open. This is the one situation where breaking a window is the correct decision, and they will make it.

If the car is running with the doors locked, which happens occasionally with keyless systems, treat it as urgent for a different reason — particularly in an enclosed space.

The thirty seconds worth spending

  • Try every door and the boot. Obvious, frequently effective, and people skip it.
  • Is there a spare key somewhere reachable? A partner, a housemate, a parent twenty minutes away is usually cheaper than a call-out.
  • Keyless car? Look for the hidden key blade inside the fob — most have one, released by a small catch, for exactly this. It opens the driver’s door mechanically.
  • Is a window open at all? Even slightly. Say so when you call; it can make the job simpler.

Why the coat hanger is a bad idea

It is the first thing people reach for and it causes more damage than the lockout ever would.

Modern door skins are full: side airbags and their wiring, the window regulator, the lock actuator, a loom, and the clips holding the door card. Anything forced down beside the glass goes straight through that. A displaced airbag connector or a torn regulator turns a modest call-out into a several-hundred-pound repair, and the airbag warning light will not clear itself.

Inflatable wedges and proper reach tools exist precisely because doing this without damage takes the right equipment.

What an auto locksmith does

Usually a decompression wedge to create a small gap at the top of the door frame, then a long reach tool to operate the interior handle or the lock button. No damage, no trace, and on most cars a matter of minutes.

Expect to be asked for proof the car is yours — the V5C, or your ID against the address it is registered to. Anyone who does not ask is worth being uneasy about.

When it becomes a recovery job

Sometimes getting in is not the whole problem. If the car is in a car park charging by the hour, in a permit bay, blocking a driveway or an access route, or somewhere it cannot legally stay overnight, moving it may matter more than opening it.

And if the keys are not merely inside but genuinely lost, that is a different job again — see lost car keys, because a car with no working key cannot be driven away even once it is open.

Worth doing before it happens

Get a spare cut if you only have one key, and leave it somewhere sensible — not in the car, and not on the same ring as your house keys. Check your breakdown policy for whether lockouts are covered; several include it and most people never look. And if your fob has felt intermittent lately, change the battery rather than waiting for it to fail in a car park.

Common questions

Is being locked out cheaper than losing the keys?

Usually much cheaper. The key still exists and works, so nothing needs cutting or programming – it is purely a question of gaining entry. That is a shorter job with no parts involved.

Can a locksmith open my car without damaging it?

In most cases yes. An auto locksmith uses proper picks and air wedges designed for the job, and a modern car can normally be opened without a mark. What causes damage is improvised entry with a coat hanger or a rod.

Why is the coat hanger method a bad idea on a modern car?

Because of what sits inside the door skin. Side airbags, window regulators, wiring looms and door card clips are all in the path of anything pushed down beside the glass. People routinely turn a lockout into a several-hundred-pound repair this way.

My child or my dog is locked in the car. What do I do?

My keyless car has locked itself with the fob inside. Is that possible?

It should not be, but it happens – usually when the fob battery is too weak for the car to detect it from outside. Most fobs contain a hidden physical key blade for the driver’s door, which is worth finding before you assume you are stuck.

Can you open the car, or do I need a locksmith?

For a straightforward lockout an auto locksmith is usually the right call and often the quickest. If the car also needs moving – it is blocking access, in a car park charging by the hour, or somewhere it cannot stay – that is where recovery comes in.
