Breakdown recovery in the UK does not have one fixed price. The total depends on the collection location, towing distance, vehicle and work needed to load it. Published consumer estimates can provide a starting point, but you need a complete quote for your actual journey.
For context, Checkatrade’s recovery cost guide gives an indicative £75–£150 tow-truck charge, with mileage charged separately. Its underlying figures include older estimates, so treat this as background guidance rather than a current guaranteed price. These are not DK’s Recovery prices.
If you need breakdown recovery in Sheffield, call with both postcodes and your vehicle details for an individual quote.
A price described as “from” is a starting figure. Before accepting it, ask for the total payable, whether VAT applies and what could change that total.
Checkatrade’s towing guide publishes an indicative range of £1–£3 per mile. Operators do not all calculate mileage in the same way. Ask whether the charge covers loaded miles only, travel to the collection point, or a minimum distance. A mileage rate on its own is not a complete recovery quote.
For example, if a fictional quote consists of an £85 attendance charge plus 20 charged miles at £2 per mile, the subtotal is £125. This is a calculation example, not a market average or an offer from DK’s. Confirm VAT and any extras before using a figure to plan your budget.
A short trip to an available garage has different requirements from taking a vehicle home across the country. Before comparing quotes, choose the same destination and describe the same vehicle condition to each operator. Otherwise, the prices may cover different jobs.
If your preferred garage is shut, agree where the car can be delivered. Paying for one journey home and another to the garage may cost more than an agreed direct delivery. Read our advice on recovery when the garage is closed before choosing a destination.
Yes. You can request a one-off paid recovery. The RAC also explains that assistance without existing cover usually involves a charge. Buying an ordinary annual policy after the fault has occurred should not be assumed to cover that breakdown.
If you already have cover, contact the provider first. Check the recovery distance and approval process before booking independently; reimbursement is not automatic.
Send your precise pickup location, destination postcode, make and model, and a short fault description. Say whether you have the keys, whether the car rolls and steers, and whether it is an automatic, hybrid or electric vehicle. Mention passengers and any access restriction. Photos can help when taken from a safe place.
For a planned collection rather than a roadside failure, our vehicle transportation service may be the appropriate option.
Transport and workshop repairs are separate jobs unless your written agreement says otherwise. Ask what roadside work, parts or later repairs are included.
Some operators charge more outside normal hours. Ask for the total for the time you need collection, rather than relying on a daytime example.
Share the full collection and delivery details so DK’s can quote the job and explain any conditions before you agree.
