There is no flat rate for vehicle recovery, and any firm quoting one down the phone before asking where you are is guessing. What there is, is a short list of things that decide the price — and once you know them you can tell a fair quote from a vague one.
If your vehicle cannot be driven, DK’s Recovery covers Sheffield and South Yorkshire 24 hours a day for breakdown recovery and vehicle recovery. Call 07867 860723 and we will price the job before we set off.
The main cost is the round trip. A recovery within Sheffield is a different job from one that ends in Barnsley or Chesterfield, and the return leg counts even though you are not in the truck for it. Where the vehicle is going matters as much as where it is now — a car collected in Hillsborough and dropped in Rotherham costs more than the same collection dropped two streets away.
Two in the morning costs more than two in the afternoon, in this trade as in any other that runs around the clock. What should not happen is finding that out afterwards. Ask for the figure when you call.
A car that rolls, steers and comes out of gear can be loaded quickly. One with a seized wheel, a collapsed corner, no keys or a locked steering column needs winching, skates or both, and takes longer. Vans and light commercials are heavier and sometimes need a larger vehicle. Electric cars go on a flatbed as standard, because towing one with its driven wheels on the road can damage the motor.
This is the factor people forget. A car on a main road is straightforward. A car in a multi-storey with a two-metre height limit, down a narrow lane, in a field, on a verge on the A628, or boxed into a tight car park is a different job — sometimes a different truck. Tell us the access when you call and the quote will be right first time.
Motorway and dual carriageway work needs more care and often traffic management. Recovery from the M1 through South Yorkshire is not the same job as a residential street, and it should not be priced as though it is.
Most jobs finish at the destination. Occasionally a vehicle needs holding — you have not chosen a garage yet, or an insurer has not confirmed where it goes. That is a separate, clearly stated cost, and it should never be a surprise.
Four things let us give you a price in one call rather than three:
You should get a figure before the truck leaves, and that figure should hold unless something changes on arrival that nobody could have known — and if it does change, you should be told before any extra work starts. Be wary of “we will sort it when we get there”, of prices that rise once the car is already loaded, and of anyone unwilling to put the number in a text message.
Distance changes the arithmetic completely. If the car is a long way from home, our guide to getting a car back to Sheffield from a long way away covers how those jobs are priced and whether to repair it there instead.
If you have breakdown cover and you are safe where you are, use it — you have already paid for it. A local firm tends to be worth calling when you need someone quickly, when the job is awkward enough that a national provider will not take it, when you want the vehicle taken to your garage rather than the nearest approved one, or when you are outside the terms of your policy. Many people end up using both across a year, and there is nothing wrong with that.
After a non-fault accident, the other driver’s insurer is generally liable for recovery and storage. Keep every receipt, note the time you called, and hold on to the paperwork we give you showing what was recovered, from where, and to where. That document is what an insurer asks for. See our accident recovery page for what happens after a collision.
No, and be cautious of anyone who quotes one before knowing where you are. The price depends on distance, the time of day, the type and condition of the vehicle, and how easily we can reach it. What you should expect is a firm figure before we set off, not after.
Where the vehicle is, where it needs to go, the make and model, and what has happened to it. If it will not roll, steer or come out of gear, say so, because that changes how it has to be loaded.
Out-of-hours work generally costs more than the same job at midday, as it does with any 24-hour trade. It should still be quoted before we set off, not added afterwards.
If you have cover and are not in danger, use it. Where local recovery tends to win is speed, awkward jobs a national provider will not take, and situations where the vehicle needs moving to a specific garage rather than the nearest approved one.
The other driver’s insurer is generally liable for recovery and storage. Keep the paperwork we give you, note the time you called, and pass both to your insurer.
If a vehicle needs holding before it goes to a garage or an insurer’s compound, that is a separate cost and we will tell you the daily rate up front. Most jobs do not need it.
