Business breakdown cover provides assistance for eligible vehicles used for work when they suffer a covered breakdown. Depending on the policy, it may include roadside help, recovery, assistance at a business premises and support with continuing a journey. It is not automatically a repair warranty or protection against lost business income.

A sole trader with one van and a company operating several cars can have very different requirements. Start with how the vehicles are used, then check the policy wording against that use.

Who should check their business breakdown cover?

Consider the journeys your business actually makes: travelling between appointments, carrying tools, delivering goods or transporting paying passengers. Tell the provider the real use when requesting a quote. Do not assume that private-car cover includes commercial driving.

The AA’s business car and van information distinguishes ordinary business vehicles from specialist taxi, courier and delivery requirements. It also identifies vehicle weight limits. Eligibility rules are provider-specific, so obtain written confirmation for your own vehicles.

What can business breakdown cover provide?

  • Roadside assistance: an attempt to get an eligible vehicle moving after a covered failure.
  • Recovery: transport if roadside assistance cannot resolve the problem, within the selected distance and destination rules.
  • Assistance at your premises: a benefit to check if a vehicle will not start before the working day begins.
  • Onward travel: possible help with a hire vehicle, alternative transport or accommodation, subject to the chosen product and its limits.
  • Fleet administration: arrangements for registering, replacing or adding the vehicles that need protection.

These are features to compare, not a promise that every policy includes them. See the RAC’s business breakdown options and the policy documents supplied with any quote.

What should you check for exclusions or extra charges?

Ask specifically about replacement parts, garage labour, accident recovery, lost keys, wrong fuel, repeat faults and faults that existed before cover began. Check when protection starts after purchase or after adding a vehicle. A policy bought during an existing breakdown is not automatically a solution for that incident.

Do not assume a recovery benefit pays for spoiled goods, missed appointments, damaged tools or lost revenue. Ask your provider which separate arrangements, if any, address these risks. Likewise, an onward-travel hire car may not replace a working van with shelving, equipment or specialist capacity.

A practical checklist for a business owner

  1. List the vehicles: registration, model, dimensions, weight and normal use.
  2. List the routes: local appointments, longer UK journeys or travel abroad.
  3. Choose a recovery destination: your workshop, a dealer or a garage able to accept the vehicle.
  4. Plan for the load: identify who can collect tools or goods if they cannot travel with the vehicle.
  5. Give drivers a clear process: the assistance number, account details, who can approve costs and who should receive updates.
  6. Review changes: update the provider when a vehicle is replaced or its work changes.

Example: a Sheffield tradesperson’s van stops

Imagine a tradesperson travelling from Sheffield to a booked job when the van becomes undriveable. Recovering the van is only one decision. Someone also needs to inform the customer, arrange access to tools and confirm that the repairer can accept the van.

Write those responsibilities into a short breakdown procedure before an incident. Our van fleet breakdown planning guide covers the operational side. The procedure should work whether assistance comes through a policy or a separately booked recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a fleet to consider business cover?

No. A single working vehicle may need a business or specialist product. The use of the vehicle matters as well as the number owned.

Does it cover every employee?

Check whether the arrangement follows a registered vehicle or a named person and what driver conditions apply.

Can I book independent recovery and claim it back?

Ask the cover provider before arranging it. Keep the approval and invoice; do not assume independent costs will be reimbursed.
