Overheating is one of the few faults where what you do in the next two minutes decides whether this costs sixty pounds or two thousand. The car will usually let you carry on. That is the trap.

The first two minutes

  1. Air conditioning off. It adds load and heat.
  2. Heater to full hot, fan on maximum. Uncomfortable, and it genuinely works — the heater matrix is a small radiator, and running it pulls heat out of the engine. It buys you a few hundred metres to reach somewhere safe.
  3. Pull over as soon as it is safe and switch the engine off.
  4. Leave the bonnet shut if there is steam. Opening it achieves nothing and puts your face over scalding vapour.
  5. Wait. Properly — thirty minutes at least before touching anything.

The three things that turn this expensive

Opening the radiator cap

The system is pressurised, which raises the coolant’s boiling point well above 100°C. Release that pressure and the whole lot flashes to steam and comes out of the opening. It causes serious burns every year. If the engine is hot, the cap stays shut — there is no version of this where opening it helps.

Cold water into a hot engine

A cylinder head at several hundred degrees, hit with cold water, can crack. That converts a cooling fault into an engine replacement in one well-meant action. If it has cooled thoroughly and you genuinely have to add something, add it slowly with the engine running — and understand that water alone is a get-home measure, not a repair.

“It settled down, so I carried on”

It settled because you slowed, or stopped at lights, or came off a hill. Nothing has been fixed. The gauge climbs again on the next incline, and the damage accumulates with every cycle. Most warped heads we recover belong to people who did exactly this, twice.

What is actually wrong

Coolant loss — a split hose, a leaking radiator, a failed water pump. Look for a puddle and a sweet smell.

A stuck thermostat — closed, so coolant never circulates to the radiator. Cheap part, quick job, catastrophic if ignored.

A failed cooling fan — the classic sign is overheating in traffic but running fine at speed, because airflow does the fan’s job once you are moving.

A head gasket — sometimes the cause and often the consequence. White smoke, a mayonnaise-like residue under the oil cap, or coolant disappearing with no visible leak.

Sheffield hills make it worse

A cooling system that is marginal copes on the flat and fails on a climb. Long ascents out of the city, or a queue on a hill in summer with the air conditioning on, are exactly the conditions that expose a tired thermostat or a fan that has quietly stopped working.

If it overheats on hills but seems fine elsewhere, that is not the car being temperamental. That is a fault with a specific cause.

When it needs recovering

Essentially always, if the gauge has gone into the red. Even where the car will restart and drive, the sensible order is to get it to a garage on a truck and find out what failed — rather than discover it was the head gasket by driving another eight miles on it.

Tell us when you call whether there was steam, whether you saw a leak, and roughly how far you drove after the gauge climbed. That last one matters more than anything else for what happens next.

My temperature gauge is climbing. What should I do right now?

Turn the air conditioning off and the heater to full hot with the fan on maximum – that pulls heat out of the engine and buys you a little time. Then pull over as soon as it is safe and switch off. Do not try to reach home or a garage.

Can I keep driving if it cools down again?

No. It cooled because you slowed or stopped, not because the fault went away. The next hill or queue brings it straight back, and each overheating cycle does more damage.

Why should I never open the radiator cap?

How much damage does overheating cause?

It depends almost entirely on how long you kept driving. Stop at the first sign and it is often a hose or a thermostat. Carry on a few miles and you are looking at a warped cylinder head or a failed gasket, which is a different order of bill.
