Nobody researches recovery companies in advance. You choose one standing at the roadside, in a hurry, usually in the rain. So this is the short version: six questions, and what a decent answer sounds like.
DK’s Recovery covers Sheffield and South Yorkshire 24 hours a day for breakdown recovery and vehicle recovery. Call 07867 860723.
The six questions
1. Where are you coming from, and how long will you be?
A good answer is a specific time and an honest one. “As soon as we can” is not an answer. A firm already working in your area can usually tell you within ten minutes either way.
2. What is the total price?
It should cover the whole job including the return leg, and you should have it before the truck sets off. Ask them to text it. Anyone who cannot price the job until they are standing next to your car is leaving themselves room.
3. Can you take it where I want it taken?
Your garage, your home, a body shop of your choosing. After a non-fault accident you are not obliged to use your insurer’s recommended repairer, and you are certainly not obliged to use whichever yard the recovery driver prefers.
4. Can you handle this particular car?
Tell them if it is electric, four-wheel drive, automatic, a motorcycle, or will not roll or steer. A company that quotes without asking any of this has not thought about the job. See how recovery methods differ for why it matters.
5. Where exactly are you taking it if I have not decided?
If the vehicle is going into storage, ask where, and what the daily charge is. Storage is where unexpected bills come from.
6. Are you insured for this?
A reasonable question, reasonably answered. Any established operator carries goods-in-transit and liability cover and will not be offended.
The one to watch out for
At accident scenes in particular, recovery vehicles sometimes arrive that nobody at the scene called. In the confusion after a collision it is easy to assume the police or your insurer sent them.
Before letting anyone take your car, ask who instructed them. If the answer is vague, decline. A vehicle moved to a yard you did not choose can accrue storage and release charges, and disentangling that afterwards is far harder than making one more phone call at the roadside.
Red flags
- No fixed price before setting off, or a price that changes once the car is loaded.
- Reluctance to put the quote in writing.
- Pressure to use their garage or storage rather than yours.
- No questions about the vehicle’s condition.
- Willingness to tow an electric or four-wheel-drive car on its own wheels.
- No phone number that a person answers.
Local firm, or your breakdown policy?
If you have cover and you are safe where you are, use it — you have already paid for it, and for a straightforward fault it is the obvious call.
A local firm earns its place when you need someone quickly, when the job is awkward enough that a national provider declines it, when you want the car at a specific garage rather than the nearest approved one, or when you fall outside your policy terms. Knowing the difference is worth more than loyalty to either.
What to have ready before you dial
- Where you are — postcode, road and nearest junction, or a motorway marker post.
- Where it needs to go, or that you have not decided yet.
- Make, model, fuel type.
- Whether it rolls, steers and comes out of gear.
- How many people are with you, and whether there is a child seat or a dog.
Five details, one call, one price.
Common questions
What should I ask a recovery company before agreeing?
Where they are coming from and how long they will be, the total price including the return leg, whether they can take the vehicle to your chosen destination, and whether they can handle your car’s condition – automatic, four-wheel drive, electric, or not rolling.
Someone turned up at my accident who I did not call. What should I do?
Do not let them take the vehicle until you know who instructed them. At collision scenes, operators sometimes arrive uninvited and move cars to storage that accrues daily charges you may be asked to pay. Ask who sent them, and if the answer is unclear, decline and call a firm yourself or wait for your insurer’s.
Is a local recovery firm better than national breakdown cover?
They do different jobs. If you have cover and you are safe, use it – you have paid for it. Local firms tend to be quicker, take on awkward jobs, and will move the vehicle to your chosen garage rather than the nearest approved one.
How do I know a quote is genuine?
It should be given before the vehicle leaves, cover the whole job including the return distance, and be something they will put in a text message. A quote that cannot be given until they arrive is not a quote.
Does it matter if the company is local to Sheffield?
For response time, yes. A firm already working across Sheffield and South Yorkshire knows the Parkway, the M1 junctions and the awkward car parks, and is not routing a truck from another county.
What if my car needs specialist handling?
Say so on the call. Electric vehicles, four-wheel drives, most automatics, motorcycles and anything with a seized wheel need particular equipment. A company that does not ask about this before quoting has not understood the job.
