A van breaking down is rarely just a vehicle problem. It is a delivery not made, a job not finished, a customer waiting. The recovery itself is straightforward — what makes it different from a car is weight, load and access.

DK’s Recovery covers Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Chesterfield 24 hours a day for van and commercial vehicle recovery. Call 07867 860723.

What makes a van different

Weight. An empty transit is heavier than most cars; a loaded Luton is heavier again. That decides which truck comes, and it is why guessing on the phone helps nobody.

Height and length. High-roof and long-wheelbase vans do not fit everywhere a car does — multi-storey car parks and low bridges rule out some approaches entirely.

Load. There is a legal limit to what a recovery vehicle can carry. A heavily loaded van may need part-unloading, or a larger truck.

Access. Vans break down where they work: building sites, tight residential streets, industrial estates, customer driveways. Describe the access and the right vehicle turns up first time.

What usually stops a working van

Much the same list as cars, weighted differently. Batteries suffer from constant short journeys with the engine off and the radio on. Clutches wear faster under load and stop-start delivery work. Tyres carry more weight and take more kerb damage. And DPF problems are common on vans doing short urban runs that never get hot enough to regenerate.

Tools and stock

Worth deciding before the van is loaded. If it is going somewhere it will be left overnight, take valuable tools with you.

Insurers are frequently strict about tools left in vehicles, and a garage yard is not a secure compound. Ten minutes emptying the van is cheaper than a claim that gets declined.

Keeping the day going

If the van is carrying a job’s materials, say so when you call. Sometimes the answer is recovering the van to a garage and the load to where it was going, and it is easier to plan that at the outset than to work it out once everything is on the bed.

Across South Yorkshire

Vans do not stay in one town. We cover Sheffield and out to Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster, Chesterfield and Worksop — including the M1 junctions in between, which is where a lot of commercial breakdowns actually happen.

If you run more than one van, the same questions come up every time one goes down, and it is worth deciding the answers in advance rather than at the roadside.

What to tell us

  • Make, model, and roughly the size — small van, transit, Luton, crew cab.
  • Whether it is loaded, and roughly how heavily.
  • Whether it rolls, steers and comes out of gear.
  • The access where it is standing.
  • Where it needs to go, and whether the garage is expecting it.

Common questions

Do you recover vans as well as cars?

Yes – vans, Lutons, crew cabs and light commercials. Weight, height and whether the van is loaded all change which vehicle we send, so mention them when you call.

Does it cost more to recover a van than a car?

Usually a little, because heavier vehicles need a larger truck and take longer to load. The price is set the same way as any other job: distance including the return leg, time of day, and how difficult it is to load.

Can you recover a fully loaded van?

Often yes, but tell us the weight and what is in it. There is a legal limit to what a recovery vehicle can carry, and a heavily loaded Luton may need part-unloading or a larger truck rather than being taken as it stands.

What about the tools and stock inside?

Your responsibility to secure. If the van is going somewhere it will be left overnight, take valuable tools with you – insurers are often strict about tools left in vehicles, and a garage yard is not a secure compound.

Can you recover a van from a customer’s driveway?

Yes, though access matters. Narrow drives, low branches and tight turns all affect whether a flatbed can get in. Describe the access when you call and we will send something that fits.

How quickly can you reach a broken-down van?

It depends where you are and what is already running. Tell us the location and we will give you a realistic time – which matters more for a van, because it is usually somebody’s working day stopped.

Van off the road?

Tell us the size and the load and we will send the right truck. 07867 860723 — 24 hours a day.
