Roadside Help or Vehicle Recovery?

Roadside assistance is intended for situations that may be assessed where the vehicle has stopped. If the vehicle cannot be dealt with safely at the roadside, DK’s Recovery can help arrange onward recovery. For a battery-related no-start, see our jump start service; for an immobilised vehicle, view our breakdown recovery service.

What can honestly be fixed at the roadside

This is the part most recovery firms are vague about, and being vague about it wastes your time and your money. Here is the straight version of what is worth attempting where the car sits and what is not.

Usually fixable at the roadside

A flat battery, if the battery still holds a charge. A flat tyre, if there is a serviceable spare or a working repair kit and the wheel is not damaged. A car that has run out of fuel. A bonnet, boot or door that will not release. These are the jobs where a truck turning up and leaving without the car is the right outcome, not a failure. Our guides to flat batteries and flat tyres cover what you can check yourself first.

Sometimes fixable, depending on what you find

Being locked out of the car depends entirely on the vehicle and where the keys are. A car in limp mode may be drivable a short distance at low speed or may not be, and that is a judgement made at the car rather than on the phone. A warning light on its own is not enough information either way.

Not fixable at the roadside, whatever anyone tells you

Putting the wrong fuel in needs the tank drained, which is a workshop job, and the single most expensive mistake is turning the key to see. Overheating needs the engine to cool for real, not for five minutes, and topping up a hot cooling system is dangerous. Clutch failure, brake problems and anything involving a knocking noise from the engine are all recovery jobs, and pretending otherwise just moves the breakdown a few miles further on.

Why we tell you which it is before we come out

Because the alternative is you paying for an attendance that was never going to solve it. Describe the symptoms honestly on the phone, including the things you did that you would rather not mention, and we will tell you whether this is a jump start, a roadside repair, or a job for breakdown recovery.

What to have ready when you ring

Where you are, ideally a postcode or a road name and the last junction you passed. The make, model and rough age. What the car was doing when it went wrong, and what it does now when you turn the key. Any warning lights, noises, smells or smoke. Whether it is safe where it is standing. That is the whole list.

Roadside assistance questions

How do I know whether I need roadside help or full recovery?

Tell us the symptoms and we will tell you, before anyone sets off. Roughly: batteries, tyres and fuel are usually roadside jobs; anything involving the clutch, the brakes, the cooling system, the gearbox or the wrong fuel in the tank is a recovery job. We would rather say that on the phone than charge you to find out.

Can you change a tyre if I have no spare?

Not on the spot, no. Plenty of cars now come with a sealant kit instead of a spare, and sealant will not deal with a sidewall tear or a wheel that has been driven on flat. In that case the car needs moving to somewhere the tyre can be replaced, which is a recovery job rather than a roadside one.

I put the wrong fuel in. Can you drain it where I am?

No, and be wary of anyone who says they can do it properly at the kerb. The tank needs draining and flushing under workshop conditions. The important thing right now is not to turn the key, because running the engine is what turns a fuel drain into a fuel system rebuild.

My car overheated. Can I just top it up and carry on?

Not straight away, and not safely while it is hot. A cooling system under pressure will scald you when you open it, and if it has overheated badly enough to stop, topping it up does not address why it lost coolant or whether the head gasket has gone. Let it cool properly, and if in doubt have it moved rather than driven.

Do you carry parts?

We carry what makes roadside jobs possible, not a workshop. Batteries fail, tyres go flat and cars run out of fuel far more often than anything else goes wrong, and those are what a roadside call is realistically for. Anything needing a part fitted properly is a garage job.

What does it cost if you come out and cannot fix it?

That is exactly why we ask about the symptoms first. If it sounds like a job that cannot be done at the roadside, we will say so and quote for recovery instead, so you are not paying for an attendance and then a recovery on top.
